Congratulations to AJ and Jay!

misc academy ufc open abu dhabi tourn 033 [800x600]

Crispim BJJ Barra Brothers would like to congratulate AJ and Jay on their impressive performances at the Abu Dhabi Pro West Coast Qualifying Tournament.  We would also like to thank the whole team for their help in training with these competitors in preparation for the event and for all of you who came to the tournament to show your support.

The Abu Dhabi Qualifying Tournament is a very challenging one because they group all purple, brown and black belts into one category.  It can be very intimidating for a purple belt to sign up to compete in this tournament because they will be competing directly with higher belts, brown and black.  However, both AJ and Jay rose to the challenge!

Congratulations to Jay Young for winning his first fight.  He then advanced to compete against a Black Belt twice his size and although he lost this fight, he showed a lot of heart and determination.

Congratulations to AJ Ting, purple belt, for advancing to his second match where he competed against a Black Belt under Rodrigo Medeiros.  AJ showed his true fighting spirit and beat the Black Belt by two points when he was successful at sweeping him in the final 10 seconds of the match and securing third place.

This is just the beginning and as we get closer to the Pan Ams and the Worlds, we will be ready to compete.  Our focus over the next few months will be to train hard, prepare for the tournaments and hone our skills.  Team, please come to the academy as much as possible over the next several months so that our competitors will continue to have great training partners.

Again, thank you for representing our team.  We are very proud of you both!

Congratulations to Ricardo Barros Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

ricardos grand opening 006 [800x600]We had a really great day participating in the Ricardo Barros Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Grand Opening Training Day and BBQ on Saturday, 1/16/10.  First, we at Crispim BJJ Barra Brothers would like to congratulate RBBJJ and Ricardo and his family on the successes they have experienced in developing an academy that promotes team, family and top level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Their successes are well earned and deserved which is why they were able to move to a much bigger academy so that they can teach BJJ and the meaning of team and family to more people in their community.  Secondly, I would like to thank all of the team from Crispim BJJ who attended and showed their support for our brother.    The training was incredible and the positive energy that was present yesterday was overwhelming.  Family, great training and instruction, support, and positive energy- this is what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about!  Also, I would like to thank my fellow brothers and Black Belts for being there and providing instruction for our group.  We had 5 Black Belts on the mat yesterday and I think it is safe to say that we ALL learned something yesterday.  Besides Alexander Crispim and Ricardo Barros, Carlos “Sapao” from Ocean Beach Barra Brothers was there (with many of his students), and Fabio “Pateta” Prado (from Ultimate Fitness in Sacramento/Urijah Faber) and Leonardo “GloGlo”.  It was a great day, and we at Crispim BJJ Barra Brothers wish Ricardo Barros Brazilian Jiu Jitsu all of the successes possible.

We are posting some pictures, but many more will follow.

Crispim opens Strikeforce with a win

By Steve Cofield

Alex Crispim, a second degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, showed a well-rounded game in wearing down A.J. Fonseca. Crispim won a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards, in a featherweight fight to kick off Strikeforce at the H.P. Pavilion in San Jose.

Showing a great gas tank after taking the fight on just two weeks notice, Crispim (4-2) was able to get Fonseca on the deck in all three rounds. He worked chokes in each scenario.

The final round was his best. Although it wasn’t without a little controversy. Crispim had Fonseca pinned against the cage. Fonseca was in a vulnerable position when he took two big knees to the face and then dropped to his rear end. Crispim then threw an illegal knee. The fight was halted for 30 seconds but no point was deducted. Fonseca was worse for wear with what looked like a broken nose.

Fonseca was out of gas and hurt. He got worked over on the ground in the final 90 seconds. Crispim worked an omoplata then transition to what looked like an armbar and then closed the fight trying for a heel hook.

Fonseca fights out of Sacramento and Urijah Faber’s camp.

Here are some pictures from the Internet and some that Jessica Lee took (thank you!).  Please forward any other pictures or video that you may have taken to info@CrispimBJJ.com. Thank you.
